ESSENTIAL PUBLICITY

One of the questions that I am often asked by Publicity Officers and the like, from Clubs and Societies around the World is, "What do I have to do to get our events publicised in Budgerigar World?" The answer is simple - just send the details to me at Basingstoke. However, as you will appreciate there are numerous events taking place every month and to publicise them all would be impossible and so there is a key to publicity success. The first of these is to ensure that I receive the notice of an event at least 3 months before it is due to take place. As you will appreciate the planning for future editions takes place well in advance of publication.

Secondly, your publicity should be of interest to the fancy in general and not overly parochial. The publicity should be seen as a means of advertising your Society in a manner that will attract new members and offers ideas to other event staging groups of fanciers. Try to provide an interesting summary of a previous meeting, which will encourage new fanciers to support future events. If a knowledgeable speaker has entertained you, I will always welcome a transcript of what was said, for publication. This service that we provide at no charge will be found to be extremely useful. Finally, these details should be sent either hand written, typed or by Email together with a contact telephone number.

Room for comments at all levels.

A recent telephone call from a Beginner expressed an opinion that I am sure is shared by other Beginners and Novices but is completely unfounded. He told me that as a newcomer to the hobby, other more experienced fanciers were not interested in his views and opinions and they were dismissed as the comments of someone who knows nothing. He also felt that there was a degree of censure imposed by the fancy press for similar reasons. I can assure others with similar thoughts that so far as Budgerigar World is concerned, we would welcome comment from newer hobbyists. Opinions are certainly not the restricted to Champions and the learning process can be beneficial in both directions. Long gone are the days when the old methods were viewed as the best; all we have to do is look at the birds and management methods of yesteryear to see that.

The breeding season for many will be fast drawing to a close and the Budgerigar World Laser Torches will have been working over-time. It should be noted that spare parts for these useful items are available. Spare bulbs and switches may be purchased from the Budgerigar World Head Office at The County Press, Bala.
